Virtual Preservation: University and Museum in Action

The work describes a collaborative project focused on the digitization of archaeological finds for a local museum, with the aim of creating a virtual collection online. This initiative, which involved university students, focused on the use of digital technologies to preserve and share the museum's cultural heritage through an online virtual exhibition. Through engaging learning activities, students acquired practical skills in digitizing artefacts and creating interactive online exhibitions, thus contributing to the development of their skills in digital heritage conservation.

The report includes a brief description of the institution involved, the Open-Air Museum of the Roman Villa of Albir, which stands out for its innovation in the use of digital technologies to improve the visitor experience. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the museum highlighted the need to invest in staff training and digital skills development to fully exploit the potential of digital technologies in the museum sector.

Needs identified by students include training in digital skills, access to advanced technological tools, and effective management of online platforms to increase audience engagement and improve the accessibility of the museum's offerings.

The project involved several laboratory sessions at the University of Alicante, focused on hands-on learning of the technologies and methodologies used in digitization and the creation of virtual exhibitions. Sessions included an introduction to digital photogrammetry, creating and refining 3D models, preparing models for sharing online, and uploading and editing models to platforms like Sketchfab.

Evaluation of the project highlighted its success in providing students with practical skills in digital archiving and creating virtual collections online, thus contributing to the preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage. The collaboration between the museum and academic institutions has demonstrated the value of digital technologies in improving public engagement with archaeology.

In conclusion, the project represented a transformational journey towards the adoption of digital technologies in the museum sector, providing valuable learning outcomes for students and significant contributions to the museum's mission in the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage.
